#72: healing from stage 4 colon cancer w/ Julie Stevens

Talk about decluttering your health no matter what previous practitioners have told you is possible?! This is an episode you will want to reference time and time again and share with friends who have been effected (or are afraid of being affected) by cancer.

Fallon is joined by Stage 4 colon cancer survivor and MOJO Health founder, Julie Stevens. Julie shares her step-by-step system for healing from cancer and why she created MOJO Health, a non-profit that offers free life-SAVING resources on their website.

the BIG AHAs that everyone on Earth needs to know from this episode:

--Julie's only symptom was low iron. She was only 43 years old so she had a routine colonoscopy which revealed the Stage 4 cancer

--there are 6 cancer healing toolboxes available; most U.S. oncologists only use 1 toolbox

--Oncologists are compensated every time they prescribe chemotherapy

--Julie's discoveries of how the healthcare and hospital systems REALLY work as an industrial psychologist

--The location and size of the cancer isn't that important.. what's important is the SPECIES of cancer cells and they all have different treatments-- mainstream U.S. doctors rarely test the species of cancer cells so you NEED to advocate for yourself

--How a "Song of the Day" and her daily blog got her through the "Cancer Girl" stage of her journey

--She had NO side effects "because side effects are optional." All of this insight and data is on MOJO Health's website https://www.mojohealth.org/

--Why the hardest part of her journey was finding out that her cancer was gone and she was no longer "Cancer Girl".. and no longer the person she was before the cancer

--The birth of MOJO Health, the platform for cancer education and support through data and community. There is every tool you could possibly need including a script for how to talk to your oncologist about the holistic approach including demanding the $30 lab panel that tells you what type of cancer cells you have

--Why collecting cancer data is her favorite hobby

--Only 8% of cancer risk is genetic

--the lab panel your oncologist needs to run if you've received a cancer diagnosis

--1909 is when the medical model changed for "treating symptoms" instead of taking a full, holistic approach

Julie Stevens was able to pivot from diagnosis of Stage 4 aggressive, inoperable, and chemo resistant colon cancer to cancer free in 9 months by applying everything she has learned across her personal and professional experiences. She had a few advantages: deep knowledge of industrial/organizational psychology, spent years working within the healthcare industry, lives in a healthcare dense environment, and she is a fabulous party planner.

Some of the most relevant past work experience was partnering with the American Hospital Association during the roll out of Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA, aka Obamacare) to define the talent requirements for healthcare professionals in response to the new legislation; Being a card carrying member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and Chicago Health Executives Form so she understands how healthcare executives make decisions; and working with many insurance companies to understand how they staff and make decisions around standards of care. She spent the last 20 years working for industrial/organizational psychology consulting firms helping them identify the right talent to execute their business strategy - so when it came to “staffing” a team to save her life, she was literally an expert. She also quickly realized the typical patient's ‘job” wasn’t clearly defined based on how healthcare is delivered in a post-covid world - so she went to work studying what each professional could bring to the table and then what her role was in creating health and has developed a job description for cancer patients to help them understand how they can have the best experience with the most favorable outcomes possible. And she knew her ‘superpower’ was the ability to find gratitude and joy in the darkest moments of her life.

She lives by her mantra of ‘Maximize Joy’ and has built a community to support that is unparalleled. One of the most engaging ways she has done this is by throwing theme parties for every infusion of chemotherapy or immunotherapy. By bringing together all of her strengths and applying them in her journey to heal from cancer, Julie has identified a formula for healing cancer, not just treating cancer, that she is confident can make cancer suck less for millions of people across the globe annually.
